The Future of SharePoint - SharePoint 2016 RTM

SharePoint 2016 RTM

Last week was the release of SharePoint Server 2016 RTM - which includes new capabilities for users, IT pros and administrators, as well as the next generation of hybrid capabilities for SharePoint. Also released is the availability of cloud hybrid search for SharePoint Server 2013 and higher - allowing on-premises and Office 365 content to be surfaced in one search result.

What’s next for SharePoint

As work teams become more dynamic and digital content growth continues to skyrocket, SharePoint will play an ever increasing role in enabling content collaboration for the new way of working. As a part of Microsoft’s broader ambition to reinvent productivity, Microsoft are making it their mission to make SharePoint more simple, mobile, intelligent and secure to help customers unlock the value of having it as an integrated part of Office 365.

This year, Microsoft will release significant new

SharePoint® 2013 Project Management Feature Setup – Part 1

Project Management in SharePoint 2013 & Project 2013 – Part 1 Setup

There is a great new Site Feature called Project Management in SharePoint® 2013 and for those that use a site per project, this is the feature for you!

This feature enables a number of different tools within your site, such as a task list, a calendar and a web part that is a visual timeline of the projects’ current state. This can be monumentally helpful when having to keep many different participants up-to-date about a specific project.

For those of you that are shouting 'I already use Project 2013!', this is not to be a replacement, but more of a Project 2013 feature enhancement, by making the work you do in project centrally accessible with no more tools than a browser and access to your SharePoint site. From this article you will be able to setup your own site with Project Management features and use Project 2013 to edit. Okay, let’s get down to business, assuming you

SharePoint - List Personal Views

Microsoft SharePoint® - List Personal Views

One of the most under used features of a SharePoint list is ‘Personal Views’. A Personal View is a view of a list which is only visible by its creator. You might ask ‘When will this be useful?’ Well, to explain, let me layout a scenario.

Someone has created a list which will be used for issue tracking, but when they create it they layout the items in a way that makes it easy for a person to create issues. Later, a person that fixes the issues comes along and wants to see what issues have been assigned to him. They could quite simply sift through all the issues, finding ones that have been assigned to them or filter the list, but this is not saved and will have to be done each time they visit the list.

A more permanent solution would be to create a Personal View. You could ask for a permanent view to be created, but this involves relying on someone else to do it if you don’t have the appropriate

Offline File Sync for Microsoft SharePoint® using SkyDrive Pro

Offline File Sync for Microsoft SharePoint® using SkyDrive Pro

Finally Microsoft has come up with a way to work offline with SharePoint files that is not only very simple and easy to use, but it also works with SharePoint 2010, not just the latest and greatest 2013 version of SharePoint. What is this great new piece of tech I hear you ask? Well the clue is in the title. It is called SkyDrive Pro.

SkyDrive Pro is just like Dropbox, or Google Drive, but is for working with SharePoint libraries either on premise or with Office 365. Initially SkyDrive Pro was only available as part of Office 2013, but Microsoft have now released it as a standalone download (You can get it here), and it will quite happily run alongside old versions of office. This is great news for users who cannot or don’t want to upgrade their Office suite just yet.

If you are running SharePoint 2013, connecting a library to SkyDrive is very simple. Just browse to the library you want to

SharePoint 2013 Outlook Calendar Integration

Microsoft SharePoint® 2013 Calendar Integration with Microsoft Outlook®

Two way SharePoint and Outlook calendar integration is still a great feature with SharePoint 2013. The feature has been around in a previous version of SharePoint, but I thought it was worth re-visiting it briefly for any new adopters of SharePoint 2013.

To connect your SharePoint 2013 calendar to Outlook (in this example I am connecting to Outlook 2010) all you have to do is click the ‘Connect to Outlook’ button in the Calendar ribbon.

 SharePoint 2013 Connect to Outlook

You will then be prompted by Internet Explorer to allow the connection.

 Outlook Security Warning

Click ‘Allow’. Then Outlook will ask you to confirm the connection too.

SharePoint 2013 to Oulook Connection Confirmation

Click ‘Yes’. Outlook will then present the SharePoint 2013 calendar just like any other outlook calendar.

You can now work with the calendar from either Outlook or SharePoint and all your
